The term hypoallergenic cosmetics products refers to products that don’t provide too much of allergic reactions when applied. These cosmetic products are believed to be safer than the usual cosmetic products that are available in the market today. These are considered to be apt for people who have highly sensitive skin or those who are prone to allergies. These cosmetic products are suitable for people with normal skin as well. It is up to the discretion of the cosmetic products manufacturers to give the name of “hypoallergenic” to their products as there are no strict rules and regulations laid by the FDA for categorising these products.
Are they reliable and safe in reality?
Almost all the cosmetic products contain at least one harsh element in them. The only difference between them and the hypoallergenic components is that they contain ingredients that are less harsh for the skin. However experts believe that hypoallergenic cosmetic, per se, are not really beneficial or result oriented. Since manufacturers of various products have full freedom to apply this term wherever they wish, they have been using this term predominantly for marketing their brands. Also, the FDA has not prescribed any tests for checking the authenticity of these components; therefore it becomes highly difficult to actually check if cosmetic products are hypoallergenic or not.
What to note while buying hypoallergenic cosmetics products?
Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide are the two most common elements that are found in hypoallergenic cosmetic products. Check for these two ingredients as they are safe for the skin. You should buy paraben-free products, as they don’t irritate the skin in any way. As in the case of other products, while buying hypoallergenic cosmetics too, you have to do a small patch test in one part of your skin to check if your skin is responding properly.
